When Nonprofits Focus on Relationships

The heart of our programs is based on relationships. Whether someone visits our office for the first time  or a case manager is performing monthly on-site visits with clients to check in, we make every effort to acknowledge and celebrate the humanity of the people we serve. Dignity it is a part of our values.

And that impacts our work. Because by not only helping folks obtain and maintain stable housing (which, to be clear, we absolutely do) but wanting them to succeed in every aspect of their lives, we generate relationships that not only saves lives but also build futures, as well.

Meet Sandra
For example:  Sandra was diagnosed with HIV in 2014. For her, seeking housing assistance from Living Room was the first step to getting healthy. After she was fired for drug use and evicted from her home, Sandra came to Living Room to enroll in our Special Needs Housing Assistance Program. Once she was living in a supportive, stable environment, Sandra could see a doctor, face her addiction, and even confront her feelings of hopelessness. After she was healthy and sober, Sandra was rehired as a flight attendant and has since been promoted to international flights. For all our clients, Living Room’s housing programs are a springboard to building the life they choose to live.

It’s through the relationships our program staff build with clients that we’re able to make a lasting impact with folks long after they have need for our services.

Making a Lasting Impact
We’re here to end (and prevent!) homelessness for people living with HIV. It’s through the relationships our program staff build with clients that we’re able to make a lasting impact with folks long after they have need for our services.

We caught up with a few former clients. Here’s just a few things they’ve gone on to accomplish.

  • Earn a GED
  • Complete a Nurse’s Aide training program
  • Enroll in classes for social work, business, or nursing
  • Repair their credit and save enough to buy a small home
  • Stop drinking and reunite with family
  • Train and get hired as a MARTA bus driver
  • Qualify as a realtor and complete his first sale!
